Iron Level

Iron is important for healthy muscles, bone, and organ function. It is transported in the body by Red Blood Cells. If iron levels become low serious problems can develop. Iron test are checked to detect anemia and to diagnose different types of anemia. There is also a problem if iron levels are too high. Hemochromatosis is a genetic condition that causes iron to build up in the blood.

Serum iron test measures the amount of iron in the blood. Transferrin test measure a protein that carries iron. TIBC or Total iron binding capacity tells us how well the iron binds to the transferrin. The Ferritin test indicated the stores of iron in the body.

You may want this test if you are fatigued, weak, dizzy, experience shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat.
